Core Skills for Coaching:

Foundation To Use In

Academic Medical Centers

This 30 hour coach training program teaches core essential skills needed to increase organizational and patient care impact in academic medical center (or equivalent) settings. Course content includes a dedicated application to Academic Medical Centers, and a strong incorporation of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Mindfulness.

Key components of this program include:

  • Research evidence demonstrating the positive effects of coaching.

  • The application of coaching within academic medical centers.

  • The coaching mindset: what it is and when to apply it.

  • Foundational coaching skills: establishing trust, listening, asking questions, creating awareness, designing actions, planning and goal setting.

  • Coaching through the lens of equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • Mindfulness and its application to coaching.

This unique, experiential and evidence-based program, custom tailored for people who want to use coaching in academic medical centers, includes both synchronous and asynchronous learning. Participants will develop their skills through practice, large and small group activities, reflection, reading, and working with a mentor coach. A significant amount of time will be spent in small, mentor coach facilitated groups, where participants practice various coaching skills. The mentor coach provides specific input and feedback to expand their coaching acumen. Additionally, participants will have individual time with their mentor coach to focus specifically on their own coach development needs.

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Demonstrate core skills and methods for coaching.

  • Effectively assess when to use coaching appropriately and effectively.

  • Be prepared to apply coaching skills within academic medical center settings.

  • Be able to define coaching and its unique and expansive levels of impact.

  • Articulate the values in which coaching is grounded.

  • Have 2-3 specific actions they can take to improve their ability to coach.
